Through participation in the responding activity, watching the clip and learning about this artist with other children and educator, the children are able to feel safe and secure. Children will be allowed to paint anything they see, using their personal interpretation of natural landscapes around them. This activity allows children study the natural environment and try to imitate it on their paper, they will be able to experiment with shadows, contrasts and colors, and be inspired to explore the wonders of nature while creating their piece. Children will be asked open-ended questions about the art pieces and then will be taken outdoors to a park or reserve to create their own landscape painting.

They will then be shown a number of Namatjira’s art pieces, and the educator will engage them in discussion about this art. The children will first be shown a you-tube clip about Namatjira which shows many of his landscape artworks. Miller (2011) stated that experiences focused on art provide important avenues for exploration of culture and diversity. This particular artist has been chosen not only for his extraordinary Australian landscape art, but through studying a well-known indigenous painter educators will be able to teach children to acknowledge the traditional owners of our land and their connection with this country (Miller, 2011). Children are first introduced to our focus Artist- Albert Namatjira, who is one of Australia’s great artists, and is also perhaps the best known Aboriginal painter. This learning opportunity focuses on landscape painting with children from age 3 to 5 years old.
